Dear friends:

With much enthusiasm we are attaching some photographs taken during the donation of school supplies to the educational program for working children and adolescents, PENNAT, in Guatemala city. This donation was only possible thanks to your collaboration, especially those of you who attended the second annual Christmas celebration. This donation was also made possible thanks to the generous contribution of Western Union.
To continue with our support of PENNAT, this March 7th we will be hosting a trip to Casino Niagara (Unfortunately tickets are sold out) and the 2nd of May we will be celebrating Mother’s Day.

PENNAT is a non-governmental organization (NGO) that was founded in 1996.  Its goal is to provide alternative education for working children and youth who are part of Guatemala’s  impoverished social sector, so that they can improve their quality of life.

PENNAT‘s vision is to introduce & sustain an alternative educational model that focuses on the necessities, interests, and rights of working children and youth in Guatemala.  It also seeks to promote the rights of children and youth, aspiring to impact the policies of the Guatemalan government in order for it to address and invest in education.

The amount of child and youth labor is always increasing due to the migration of families from rural areas to urban centers and the lack of education provided by the central government to this social sector in Guatemala.  In the latest census, it is estimated that approximately 1 million working children and youth exist in the country, with 20% of them residing in Guatemala City.

PENNAT  focuses its efforts primarily in markets, streets, and marginalized areas  where child and youth labor is most likely to occur.  They provide elementary & high school education, computer & graphic design training, and construction trades training.  Monitoring is also provided for the  families of the children and youth being assisted so as to incorporate them into the educational process.

Currently PENNAT has a staff of 50 persons which includes educators, co-coordinators, volunteers, and promoters who are working with approximately 1500 child and youth workers in Guatemala City and the surrounding areas  including: San Pedro Sacatepéquez, San Pedro Ayampuc, Mixco, Villa Nueva, Villa Canales,  San Jose Pinula, and San Andres Petén.

The vision for the future is to provide alternative education to working children and youth  throughout the entire country while continuing to promoting  their rights and creating a national awareness of this urban phenomenon.  In addition, the organization’s intent is to  generate an innovative processes of sustainability created through the formation of an educated body of children and adolescents.

The Canadian Guatemala Association (ASOGUATE), will focus its fundraising efforts solely on this NGO.
